CERN's Tidy-up week - Procedures

Updated on: 2021-09-24

All information on CERN's Tidy-up week is available here.

In order to facilitate the collection during the “Tidy-up week”, a simplified procedure will be applied to facilitate the collection and removal of materials and waste (exception: chemical waste and waste from radiation areas, which will follow the standard procedure). The usual procedure is given in the second column for information. There will be no need to resort to tickets or EDH forms for most categories of materials. The TSOs will have direct contact with the Recuperation and Sales service to ask for the 1 m3 containers. When a container or skip is full, the TSO will contact the organising committee. A transport team will be devoted during the week to deliver and collect the containers.

Type of waste/material

Incinerable household waste includes waste from the cleaning of buildings and from the cafeterias and restaurants, as well as non-recyclable plastic items.

800 l container for household waste available close to the building or supplementary container (SNOW ticket)

800 l container in close proximity already in place

Collected by Transvoirie

Paper and cardboard

800 l container for paper and cardboard available close to the building or supplementary container (SNOW ticket)

800 l container in close proximity already in place. 2 extra 140 l containers will be added.

Emptied by the cleaning service in the 800 l container already in place, then collected by Transvoirie

Confidential paper (all documents of confidential nature)

Provided on request. (SNOW ticket)

Disposal/exchange of the 120 l or 770 l container: 10,40 CHF

Destruction/recycling of paper: 537 CHF/tonne

If necessary, demand bin from TSO. TSO will contact organising committee.

Printer toner cartridges

Bring to bldg. 194 or make EDH transport request if the material is voluminous.

Big volume: cardboard pallet put in place on demand from TSO

Small volume: contact organising committee

Binders

Bulky or household waste

If you want to request a container, contact your TSO

Aluminium or copper cables: One skip for cables with copper, another for cables with aluminium.

Bring to bldg. 133 or request bins:

< 1 m3: 1 m3 container (SNOW ticket)

> 1 m3: 4 - 10 m3 skip (SNOW ticket)

If you want to request a container, contact your TSO

For mixed metals: a container or a skip must contain metals from the same family - it's necessary for sorting. For example, one container for stainless steel, one for aluminium, one for copper, one for steel, one for brass, one for lead and a separate one for copper cables.

Bring to bldg. 133 or request bins:

< 1 m3: 1 m3 container (SNOW ticket)

> 1 m3: 4 - 10 m3 skip (SNOW ticket)

If you want to request a container, contact your TSO (for buildings that doesn't already have a container)

Wooden pallets marked "EUR" with the dimensions 120cm x 80cm.

A refundable deposit has been paid. They must therefore, without exception, be returned to the Goods Reception (bldg. 194 on the Meyrin site and bldg. 904 on the Prévessin site).

Bring it yourself or make EDH transport request.

Arrange a temporary storage for the building.

Wooden pallets not marked "EUR", wooden crates, chipboard - High quality wood (untreated and not painted).

< 1 m3: place close to household waste containers

> 1 m3: 4 - 10 m3 skip (SNOW ticket)

Place next to household waste containers close to the building.

Collected by Transvoirie

Treated or painted wood (low quality wood): do not mix up with high quality

< 1 m3: 1 m3 container

> 1 m3: 4 - 10m3 skip (SNOW ticket)

Arrange a temporary storage for the building. If it's a large volume, contact the organising committee.

Bulky waste (used furniture etc…):

Bring it to bldg. 133 or make EDH transport request

The material owner should contact TSO who establishes a list. Arrange a temporary storage for the building.

Microwave ovens, kettles, coffee machines (small home appliances already on CERN sites)

Bring it to bldg. 133 or make EDH transport request

The material owner should contact TSO who establishes a list. Depending on volume, the TSO can demand a 1 m3 container or arrange a temporary storage for the building.

Computing equipment and electronic waste (screens, keyboards, computer cases, printers, TVs, empty hard drives (all hard drives must be completely emptied before disposal)

Bring it to bldg. 133 or demand a red container via EDH

If the IT-waste campaign isn't already ongoing in the building, request a 1 m3 container by contacting your TSO.
