Organising and coordinating activities during LS3: a shared responsibility

LS3 is set to be a busy period for CERN, with a wide range of activities taking place across the accelerators, experiments and buildings on the site – from construction, maintenance and upgrades, to consolidation and installation work, transport operations, tests and more. When these interventions overlap, the risks associated with concurrent activities increase.
To manage this situation, CERN has put in place a robust coordination structure, with dedicated teams covering specific areas (accelerators, experiments, projects, etc.). For buildings or areas without a dedicated coordination set-up, Territorial Safety Officers (TSOs) are the primary points of contact. The people who plan and oversee activities play a vital role and contribute directly to making the LS3 a success.
Your role matters:
- Prepare and announce your activities beforehand: identify risks at the planning stage, define each intervention clearly and share information with the coordination teams. A well-sequenced schedule helps reduce the risks of concurrent activities and gives all parties the time they need to put compensatory measures in place where necessary.
- Request authorisation: use the IMPACT tool to submit formal activity authorisation requests, including for Category 1 operations, where required.
- Monitor the work being carried out: only begin work once authorisation has been granted. Do not start early or extend activities without formal authorisation. Make regular checks to ensure that safety measures are being followed, and notify the relevant parties if adjustments are needed.
Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Good coordination and clear communication help to keep everyone safe.
Consult the nine CERN Safety Fundamentals. Safety first. Safety always.
