Did you know that more than 589 million people worldwide live with diabetes (IDF , 2024), and that one in nine adults is affected? In Switzerland, almost 500 000 people are affected by this chronic disease (Diabetes Switzerland FOPH , 2024–2025). Yet type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 90% of cases, can be avoided or delayed by following a balanced diet, exercising regularly and limiting risk factors (sedentary lifestyle, being overweight, smoking).

Knowing the risk factors (family history, hypertension, age) and recognising the symptoms (intense thirst, fatigue, wounds that heal poorly) can help to prevent and manage the disease.

Join us at 11.00 a.m. on Thursday, 21 May for a diabetes awareness campaign that is intended to inform you, empower you to prevent the disease and support those who live with it. The programme will include:

  • Information stands: Novae, Diabète Vaud, Diabète Genève, Diafit, the French Federation of Diabetics, the CERN Knowledge Transfer Group and the University Hospitals of Geneva;
  • talk from 12.30 to 1.30 p.m. (Curie Room, 40/S2-C01): find out all about the disease and hear from experts and prevention associations on how to manage it;
  • Bike smoothie event: use pedal power to prepare a healthy, tasty drink!

Throughout May, Novae, in collaboration with the charity Diabète Vaud, will be offering some tailored menus as part of the “Maybe Less Sugar ” campaign, with the aim of helping you to reduce your sugar consumption.
