How can I order a first-aid cabinet/box?
First-aid cabinets/boxes and their contents can be ordered from the CERN Stores
How is a first-aid box managed?
First-aid boxes must be regularly checked by their owner to ensure that they are sufficiently stocked and the contents are in good condition. It should be noted that all users must inform the owner of the box each time they use it.
What do the first-aid boxes contain?
The required contents of first-aid boxes, as determined by the CERN Medical Service, are: MERFEN SPRAY, COMPRESSES, BANDAGES, PLASTERS and GLOVES (essential in the event of bleeding). They should not contain any medication or painkillers. See: https://cern.service-now.com/service-portal?id=kb_article&n=KB0006336
Where should a first-aid cabinet/box be installed?
The manager of the area or the activity, as applicable, is responsible for installing first-aid boxes. They are not compulsory, given that CERN has a Fire and Rescue service. These boxes are designed for minor injuries where there is no need to call in the Fire and Rescue service or visit the infirmary. First-aid boxes and their contents can be ordered from the CERN Stores. The required contents of first-aid boxes are determined by the CERN Medical Service.
Is it possible to get a flu vaccination at CERN? Is it possible to get other types of vaccination at CERN?
It is possible to be vaccinated at CERN if you have a prescription and bring your own vaccine. The Medical Service organises a seasonal flu vaccination campaign every year. All you have to do is go to the infirmary with your vaccine. No appointment is needed. You will be vaccinated as long as there are no contraindications. You can request a prescription after the vaccination for the purposes of reimbursement if your health insurance covers it.
Can the nurses at the infirmary remove stitches?
Yes, the nurses can remove stitches, subject to presentation of a doctor’s prescription. No appointment is needed.
Do I need to contact the Medical Service if I am absent for a long period (more than 21 days)?
Pursuant to the CERN Staff Rules and Regulations (R II 4.20), a medical examination is required if an employed member of the personnel is absent for more than 21 days. Once a date for your return to work has been set, you should contact the Medical Service (medical.service@cern.ch or +41 22 76 73 186) to arrange a medical check-up to assess your fitness to resume your activities. A reminder is automatically sent by e-mail after 20 days of absence.
In the absence of a date for your return to work:
- After 60 consecutive days of absence, you will receive a medical questionnaire from CERN’s consulting medical practitioner. Your GP must complete it and return it within 15 days.
- After 90 consecutive days of absence, a compulsory medical check-up by CERN’s consulting medical practitioner will be organised.
Is it possible to have a blood test at the Medical Service?
Yes, as long as you contact the infirmary 48 hours in advance and submit your prescription. The cost of having the blood sample analysed is borne by the patient. The results will be sent directly to your home address, along with the invoice from the laboratory commissioned by CERN (Unilabs Switzerland).
Is it possible to obtain a certificate of fitness for sport from the CERN Medical Service?
No, such certificates must be obtained from a general practitioner (GP) outside CERN. If you don’t have a GP, the Medical Service infirmary can refer you to an external medical facility.
Is it possible to obtain a new or repeat prescription from the CERN Medical Service?
No, the CERN Medical Service does not issue prescriptions. To obtain or renew a prescription, you should consult a general practitioner (GP) outside CERN. If you don’t have a GP, the Medical Service infirmary can refer you to an external medical facility.
How can I change an appointment for an occupational health check-up?
To cancel or reschedule an occupational health check-up (with a nurse or doctor), two options are possible:
- Via the CERN PLAMED site.
- By calling the Medical Service secretariat on +41 227673186.
Please note that appointments cancelled by the member of the personnel cannot be rescheduled via the same link. You will need to contact the secretariat to make a new appointment.
How do I make an appointment with CERN’s psychologists?
To make an appointment with CERN’s psychologists, simply send an e-mail to psychologist.medical.service@cern.ch. You will be contacted within 48 working hours.
Can an associated member of the personnel (MPA) make an appointment with one of the psychologists?
The psychologists are available to all members of the personnel, regardless of the type of contract (MPE or MPA). However, they cannot give appointments to family members or CERN contractors.
Is there a charge for appointments with CERN’s psychologists?
No, the cost of seeing a CERN psychologist is covered by CERN.
Are appointments with a psychotherapist outside CERN covered by my insurance?
This depends on your health insurance. We recommend that you contact your insurance provider to find out about the conditions of coverage. In general, a prescription from a GP is required to obtain reimbursement.
Will the line management of the person consulting a CERN psychologist be informed?
No, consultations are strictly confidential, and the psychologists are bound by professional secrecy.
Is it possible to start or continue a course of therapy with the CERN psychologists?
No, CERN’s psychologists provide only short, targeted therapy sessions. It is important that you start or continue your therapy outside CERN. However, the psychologists are available to discuss your needs and guide you towards an appropriate care provider.
Can someone with a disability, such as deafness or visual impairment, work at CERN?
Yes, it is possible for people with disabilities to work at CERN. The activity, the working conditions and safety considerations must be planned in advance. The first step is to contact CERN’s diversity and inclusion service: https://diversity-and-inclusion.web.cern.ch/
How can I consult the radiation dose records for an individual?
There are two types of dosimeter: the personal dosimeter (DIS) and the operational dosimeter (DMC).
- In the case of personal dosimeters, dose records are available on HRT. Click on “Info and Miscellaneous”, then on “Radiation Dose Records”.
