Site Gate Monitor systems (SGM)

The SGM project aims at replacing and completing the Site Gate Monitor systems installed at the CERN site exits to monitor vehicles for the presence of radioactivity. The
Site Gate Monitors are part of the staggered control strategy for detecting illicit transport of radioactive items at and from CERN and represents the final line of defence.

The SGM Project:

  • foresees to procure thirty (30) 2 new Site Gate Monitors to replace and complete the current SGM systems,
  • is planned to start in 2021 and last five years until completion,
  • has an estimated budget of 1’200’000 CHF without contingency,
  • has a human resource forecast estimated to about 8 man-years.

The SGM Project deliverables are:

  • Demonstrate the technical feasibility of the defined requirements including the integration with the site exit control systems and compliance with traffic management
  • Define an optimum share between COTS3 solutions and inhouse development or adaptations, considering maintenance and operation of Site Gate Monitors
  • Propose a scalable technical solution to be deployed at all CERN site exits in form of a technical specification based on the retained requirements
  • Procurement of Site Gate Monitors for all CERN site exits
  • Preparation of all CERN exits for the installation of the new Site Gate Monitors involving potential civil engineering works
  • Adaptation of the site exit control systems for the integration of the new SGM
  • Installation and commissioning of the new Site Gate Monitors
  • Product requirement document for the integration in REMUS
  • Complete documentation released in EDMS including but not limited to mechanical, electronics, on-site installation
  • Maintenance and operation procedures
