Hello!

I joined the Prevention and Monitoring section on the 1^st October as an Environmental Engineer. I am working on water protection and hazardous substances.

By training I am a Materials Science Engineer. I studied at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL). During my master I did one year of exchange at KTH in Stockholm and then my master thesis at CERN within the chemistry laboratory and surface treatment workshop (TE-VSC-SCC). Then I worked in the biomedical industry, in the watchmaking industry, and finally at the Swiss federal Office of Public Health in Bern within the Chemicals Division, before joining CERN.

I grew up in Geneva. I am Swiss and Italian. I like to go for walks in nature, to practice yoga, singing in a choir and dancing Lindy Hop.

Gethin Manuel, HSE-ENV-PM

Hello HSE People!

I am Gethin from the UK, originally from sunny Wales. I’m working as an Acoustic Engineer here at CERN and before joining I worked as a Senior Scientist and Noise Specialist at a Major Hazards Test Facility in Cumbria, UK.

I worked on explosive, fire and other hazardous testing for the renewables and energy industries, which followed on from completing my PhD in the subject of Blast Noise Prediction and Management.  I’m really looking forward to focusing my passion on all things loud to the work that we do here at CERN on particle physics research.  

Outside of work I love to be out in nature, sometimes on a sketchy hike and other times just admiring some wildlife. Despite being the noise police, I love music of all kinds but particularly into the electronic music scene! Love to do any kind of sport, from running, to MMA and Snowboarding (very badly). 

Really excited to meet and work with you all. Also, please speak French to me (otherwise I will never learn). Merci!

Viktoria Freifrau Marschall von Bieberstein, HSE-TS

I am Viktoria with the long surname but a short nickname: Vilu (pronounced similar to Filou). I joined the Transversal Services as a legal adviser and will mostly be working on the Safety Rules and support the HSE department in legal matters. (Basically, I am succeeding Myriam.)

Feel free to come to me with any questions about the Safety Rules. I might not know the answer (yet) but will be happy to discover it with you.

I am German and Spanish and was born and raised in Berlin. Before coming here, I worked as a legal officer for a supervisory authority in Germany. I am very excited to use my skills in a new field here at CERN.

Out of work I enjoy dancing (currently the Indian dance Kathak), throwing a good punch or right hook in classes or reading a good book. 

I am looking forward to meeting all of you 🙂

Sergio Alberto Schaer, HSE-ENV

Bonjour tout le monde,

Je m’appelle Sergio, j’ai 34 ans et je viens de Neuchâtel et je suis très enthousiaste à l’idée de rejoins le laboratoire ENV comme technicien de laboratoire en chimie.

Avant le CERN, j’ai travaillé pendant environ 9 ans comme technicien de laboratoire chimie au laboratoire des eaux Viteos ProLab à la chaux-de-Fonds.

En dehors du travail, j’aime beaucoup peindre des figurines et faire du modélisme, j’aime aussi les jeux de plateaux notamment warhammer, les parties de JdR, l’impression 3D, jeux vidéo, balade à moto ainsi que voyager.

Cemre Irmak Kayalan, HSE-OHS-DR

Hello everyone!

My name is Irmak Kayalan, and I’m from Türkiye. Before joining CERN, I completed my B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Materials Science and Nanoengineering at Sabancı University, Istanbul. In master`s, my research focused on transition metals 4B group thin films for biosensing. Before joining CERN, I worked as a materials and laser engineer at a company specialising in lab grown diamonds. I’m currently pursuing a second master’s in Materials Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, focusing on energy materials. I’m joining the QARE team within CERN’s HSE Department as an intern. I will be working on how radiation affects the mechanical properties of polymer materials and their correlation with chemical properties.

Outside of work, you will often find me swimming, experimenting in the kitchen, planning a trip or on a hike😊

Tamia Elias Mwale Dahlgaard, HSE-TS

Salut tout le monde!

My name is Tamia and I’m from Copenhagen. Happy to be here and excited to meet you all! HSE seems like a really wonderful department and I’m glad to be a part of it. 

As for my background, I recently completed my master’s degree in rhetoric, and I’m currently working as a communications officer in HSE-TS.

In my free-time I enjoy being an amateur film historian and going for a run in the fields. Other than that, I’m always eager to talk about cheese(!), hip-hop, or anything related to Star Trek and 1960s cinema.

Jana Jelic, HSE-OHS-DR

Hello everyone! My name is Jana, and I come from a very small mountain town in western Serbia. After finishing high school, I moved to Belgrade to continue my education. I completed my bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, specializing in Automation, Robotics, and AI, and I am currently finishing my Master’s degree in the same field.

Before CERN, I lived in Germany as a scholarship holder of the German Business Scholarship Programme for the Western Balkans. During that time, I had the opportunity to complete an internship in the field of building automation systems, where I worked on the planning and design of automation systems for clinics and laboratories. I also managed to visit 28 German cities during my stay — probably more than the average German visits in a lifetime!

I am very happy to join the QARE team here at CERN as an Electrical Engineer. My work will focus on investigating how radiation affects the electrical properties of cables over time. I am really curious to see how much I will learn from my colleagues over the next few months and excited to contribute to the team.

Outside of work, I love spending time in nature, especially hiking and skiing. I also enjoy exploring new places and cultures, and I am passionate about learning new languages. During high school and university, I also taught mathematics and Russian to younger students.

I am looking forward to getting to know all of you!

Hugo Siri, HSE-RP-RWM

Hi everyone,

My name is Hugo Siri, and I grew up in the south of France, near the beautiful Verdon Gorge, a place I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys nature and outdoor activities.

After spending almost three years at CERN as a contractor, I am very happy to officially join the HSE-RP-RWM section as a Project Graduate. I am excited to continue contributing to the section’s activities and to further develop my experience within HSE.

Outside of work, I am passionate about sports. I play football for a local club and also enjoy running and swimming. Last year, I completed my first triathlon, which inspired me to keep taking on new sporting challenges. I also enjoy spending time outdoors, whether hiking in the mountains or discovering new places.

I am excited to continue this journey at CERN and look forward to getting to know more colleagues across the department.

Max Gottert, HSE-ENV-EC

Hello, fellow HSE humans!

I am Max from Germany, more exactly from the loveliest town of Heppenheim. Before joining CERN, I was finishing my masters in Environmental Engineering and Energy Science.  

I started at CERN as an Energy and Climate Analyst in the HSE-ENV-EC group. My work will mostly focus on CERN’s climate and energy performance, getting a better understanding on how to reach our climate goals and lower our emissions. 

Outside work I love exploring these wonderful landscapes and mountains around CERN. If you know good hikes, let me know! Also, I really love music of all kinds. (but if there is a local prog rock scene and you know about it, please deal me the info!)

Amber Summer Price, HSE-RP-RWM

Hi everyone! My name is Amber and I am from the UK. I hold a Master’s Degree in Physics, Astrophysics and Cosmology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Radiation Protection. I have previously worked within the UK supporting radiation protection and radioactive waste management projects. Aligned with this I will be joining CERN in the radioactive waste management department where I will be supporting the waste producers and reception of waste from the LHC experiments.

Outside of work I am an avid swimmer in all forms, pools, oceans, lakes! I have recently taken up hiking and am particularly excited to discover and explore all the beautiful walks and hiking routes here. I also love baking and am looking forward to learning about and trying to make French and Swiss desserts.

Tobias Wukovitsch, HSE-TS-CS

Bonjour !

I’m Tobias, a 22-year-old master’s student in Logic and AI (a.k.a. Computer Science) from Vienna, Austria. On September 1st, I joined the HSE-TS-CS section for a one-year technical studentship as part of the REMUS project team. Alongside my studies, I spent two years as a teaching assistant for my university’s introductory C++ course and interned with the HPX open-source project.

I’m really looking forward to understanding the inner workings of a mature SCADA system like REMUS and contributing to it myself. It’s also exciting to work both with technologies I don’t typically encounter in my studies, such as WinCC OA, and with widely used ones like Kafka.

In my free time, I like all kinds of sports and getting out into nature. The best is, of course, a combination of the two, such as hiking or cycling. (CERN’s great location for such activities is another of its many benefits!)

Bonjour, je viens de Montpellier dans le Sud de la France.

Je rejoins le groupe HSE-Env, dans la section EC pour travailler sur les études environnementales nécessaires au projet FCC. L’objectif est d’obtenir la meilleure insertion environnementale possible du projet et aboutir à son autorisation administrative.

Avant mon arrivée au CERN je travaillais chez SNCF Réseau en vue de préserver les enjeux environnementaux dans le cadre des activités ferroviaires.

J’aime la lecture, les balades en nature, les footings et je suis très pressée de découvrir cette belle région.

Gilles Van Kriekinge, HSE-ENV-EC

I’m Gilles and I’m from Belgium. I’m an engineer specialized in the field of energy. Before joining CERN, I worked in spin-off on the topic of optimal sizing and control of energy assets (such as batteries, charge points, solar panels, etc). Now, I’m joining the Energy and Climate group as an Energy Data Analyst. My goal will be to model and forecast the energy consumption of CERN sites, and consequently the electricity bills. Outside of work, I like to go either for a beer (as a good Belgian …) or go hiking, skiing, kiting, and much more 🙂 

Javier Pelegrina Cortes, HSE-RP-AS

Hello everyone! My name is Javier (Javi) and I come from Spain. I am very happy to be part of the team and I look forward to meeting you. Before joining, I worked in the licensing and nuclear safety department of Westinghouse in Tarragona (Spain), which is a nuclear plant designer. I participated in projects for operating plants, innovative designs and new plants build. Before that, I was an intern at the emergency preparedness and response group of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. I am joining RP-AS, where I will work on the FCC project.

Outside  of work, I am an active member of the board of different nuclear positive groups such as the Spanish nuclear society, the Spanish young generation in nuclear and the European young generation in nuclear. This allows me to do science communication and outreach, courses and seminars, participate in science fairs and events, organize technical visits, etc. Besides this, I enjoy reading, videogames, the gym and mountain and nature trips.

Leonie Anna Angerer, HSE-RP-AS

Hi everyone!

My name is Leonie and I’m from Austria. I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Technical Physics in Graz and doing my thesis at CERN as a technical student. I’m joining the HSE-RP group, working on characterising the response of the RADOS detector with FLUKA simulations and measurements. I was working on this project as a summer student last year and I’m very happy to be back!

Between my summer studentship and now, I did an exchange semester in Tokyo, Japan, which was such an exciting and enriching experience. I love to travel, see new places, learn new languages and meet different people.  

Outside of work, I love to dance, currently mostly HipHop and Contemporary. If anyone has some insights regarding events or dance studios please do send them my way! I also really enjoy hiking, swimming and ice skating in winter and I’m always up for a good book.

Alexe Harti, HSE-TS-AS

Good morning, good afternoon or good evening to whomever is reading this introduction. My name is Alexe Harti, and I come from Chisinau, the capital of a small country called Moldova.

Currently, I am studying at HAN Unviersity of Applied Sciences with a major in Electrical Engineering. However, soon this will become a part of my past as I will be graduating after my internship at CERN.

Speaking of the internship, I will be spending my time alongside the brilliant people of the HSE-TS-IMS unit. Without going into heavy details of my assignment, I will be working alongside Clyde Laforge studying PCB current leakages at the femtoampere level.

In my free time, I enjoy swimming, playing video games and learning about anything physics related. Feel free to reach out if you wish to talk about these topics. I am ecstatic in working alongside you and ready to greet anyone with open arms.

My name is Torben Fine. I am 45 years old and come from Denmark. Before joining CERN, I worked as a train driver for 20 years. I am currently studying Marine Engineering and Technology Management and have joined the HSE-OHS-GI section for my internship.

Outside work: Back home, I enjoy sailing in my sailboat, and while I am here, I like hiking and exploring the mountains in the region.

Tjorben Michael Heine, HSE-FRS

Hi everyone! My name is Tjorben and I come from Germany.

I completed a B.Eng. in Rescue Engineering in Hamburg and, after receiving a license as an occupational safety specialist, I collaborated with several fire brigades on various projects to enhance their day-to-day safety.

I then pursued the International Master’s in Fire Safety Engineering. Some of you may already know me from my thesis internship at CERN, where I modelled fire brigade interventions in accelerator tunnel fires.

I am now joining the HSE-FRS team, where I will be working on evacuation plans and alarm reception, as well as representing the interests of the fire brigade in the FCC project.

Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, cycling (both pedal- and petrol-powered) and skiing in winter. I’m also hoping to do some sailing this summer!

I’m Beatriz, I was born and raised in Brazil (São Paulo), and I’m 25 years old. I hold a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Mauá Institute of Technology, and my background relies on reliability and safety (RAMS Engineer) for the railway sector. I’ve also worked as a Research Engineer for aeronautical systems. I’m joining the team as a Mechanical Safety Engineer.

I’m Tomás, born and raised in Lisboa, Portugal. I am a nuclear engineering graduated from both KTH in Stockholm and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, specialized in Radioactive Waste Management. And that is exactly the section of HSE I joined. I am an intern helping in the operations of thee radioactive waste treatment center.

On my free time I play Waterpolo, and Basketball, but in reality, I don’t refuse any kind of sportive activities! Do spend the remaining fair share of free time with comic books and video games.

Usually spottable performing photosynthesis around campus at lunch time, and once the weather becomes proper around the Geneva lake after work!

I’m Inès, 23, originally from the Pays de Gex, and a recent graduate in environmental project management, specialising in biodiversity conservation.🦇🪶🌱

I’ve already had the opportunity to complete two internships at CERN, and I’m continuing my journey here as a GRAD to carry out my work on biodiversity conservation across the organisation’s sites.

On a personal note, I enjoy hiking, photography (wildlife and street photography), swimming and cycling, astronomy and music (of all genres!).

I’m Matias, from Pori, Finland. I study at the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences Energy and Environmental Engineering. I have worked at wastewater facilities, both in private sector and in public.  I am excited about starting to work at HSE-ENV-PM, where I am conducting an ecotoxicological study about CERN’s effluents.

I like to spend time in nature and am planning to visit the local area’s best nature spots. Feel free to reach out if you have suggestions! Also, as a former hockey player with 10+ years on the ice, and working as a volunteer junior coach, I love ice hockey and rollerblade skating.

I’m originally from Poland and have recently joined CERN as an HSE Training Specialist in the HSE-ST-TS team. Before this, I worked in HSE in the maritime and oil and gas industries, helping keep operations safe on ships and at sites.

At CERN, I’ll be working with the team on both existing and new training activities.

Hello, my name is Charlie and I’m from Bristol in the UK. I did my undergraduate degree in computer science in Nottingham and will be working on the cluster and FLUKA system with the HSE-RP team.

My name is Felix, and I’m originally from Stuttgart, Germany, where I did my studies in Mechanical Engineering. Some of you may already know me from my time in HSE over the past three years, where I worked as doctoral student.

I’m now excited to be back in HSE-TS-IMS working as a Reliability Engineer. My main task will be to ensure the reliable integration of the in-house developed ASIC ACCURATE into our radiation monitoring systems. 

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time in nature, especially running and cycling. I’m also passionate about photography and cooking.

Hello everyone,

My name is Freya. I am originally from the UK and completed a Health Physics Apprenticeship at Wylfa Power Station in North Wales, where I developed a strong foundation in radiation protection and nuclear safety. After this, I joined Nuvia at Dungeness Power Station in Kent, where I spent 18 months gaining experience working on high activity waste and ponds projects.

I am now joining the HSE-RP team at CERN as a Radiation Protection Technician, where I will be supporting activities at the Large Hadron Collider during LS3.

Outside of work, I enjoy staying active, spending time outdoors, and travelling—while also looking forward to slightly drier weather here than in North Wales, and the opportunity to go skiing more in the winter.

Evi Heil, HSE-RP-AS

Hello everyone,

my name is Evi. I recently finished my studies in Radiation Protection back in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Now at CERN, I will be working as a Radiation Protection Engineer for the LHC experiments. As these have only been my first few weeks, I am very excited to get to know everybody and everything!

Outside of work, I love to go hiking, cycling or horse riding. Apart from that, I also love to try new (knee-friendly) sports, if anyone has recommendations! If I am not outside or doing sports, I enjoy snuggling up on my sofa with a cup of tea – either reading a good book or writing poetry.

Hello, I’m Dan from Sheffield in the UK. Nice to meet you all. Before joining CERN I worked offshore in the oil and gas industry as an Integrity Engineer. I’m now joining as the General Safety & Equipment Integrity team as the Pressure Equipment Integrity Technical Engineer. My family and I have recently moved here, and we’re looking forward to exploring the region and experiencing everything it has to offer. Outside of work, I’m a keen sportsman and already interested in trying new and emerging sports beyond my usual activities.

Daniel Leif Ake Karlsson, HSE-FRS

Hello!

My name is Daniel and I am originally from Sweden and recently moved to the area to work with the fire brigade at CERN, where I will be part of the rescue service for the next five years.

Before coming here, I worked as a firefighter in Sweden for five years. Besides regular firefighting, my home station also had a specialized HazMat unit where I gained experience with hazardous material related incidents. I have also worked as a drone instructor, training others to use unmanned aerial systems in operational work.

In my free time I enjoy staying active and I like pretty much all kinds of physical activities. I regularly train and enjoy trying new sports and outdoor activities. I also have a strong interest in football and like both playing and following the sport.

David Villamil Fernandez

Hi everyone!

I’m David. I’m from Asturias, a region in the north of Spain. I’ve been at CERN for the past three years, and now I’m [re]joining HSE-TS-CS as a Tech Lead, where I not only develop web applications but also shape the technical direction of our projects, keep an eye on code quality, spot areas for improvement, and support the team so everyone feels confident and ready to contribute.

My hobbies outside work haven’t changed much since last time I wrote this introduction. I enjoy a lot travelling, spending time in nature, doing sports, and watching films. The only difference is that I like to think I ski better now than when I first joined 😄

I’m really looking forward to working with you again. Same energy as day one!!

Ioannis Mikes, HSE-OHS-DR

Hi everyone! I’m Yannis and I grew up in Halkidiki, a region in northern Greece famous for its amazing beaches! I studied Civil Engineering and completed an MSc in Earthquake Engineering in Thessaloniki, Greece, where I also spent four years working as a civil/structural engineer in design and construction management. I hold a PhD in Earthquake Engineering from City, University of London and I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

I recently joined the HSE-OHS-DR section, and in my team (Structural & Earthquake Engineering), we assess the structural integrity and regulatory compliance of existing and future facilities and evaluate and seismic risk of CERN’s infrastructure.

In my free time, I (try to) play basketball and online chess, read history, enjoy old-school rock music and explore new places nearby with friends.

Alice Battistino, HSE-TS-AS

Hi everyone! My name is Alice, I am an English and Maltese national who has recently joined HSE as an administrative student. 

I have a bachelor’s degree from the University of Malta and am now studying for a Master’s Degree in Media and Communication with Malmö University. 

I am very interested in internal communication and am keen to make the most out of this experience by learning how to support my fellow colleagues to the very best of my abilities.

Some fun facts about me, as a teenager I practiced Judo and formed part of the Malta national team. Now, in my free time I love to explore nature, play video games and read. I am also a big film buff and especially love watching sci-fi, thrillers and anything spooky! 

Robin Jean Platiaux, HSE-ENV-PM

Hello everyone ! My name is Robin, I’m 23 years old and I come from Belgium. I did my studies in my beloved city of Ath, and I’m currently  finishing a Master’s degree in Industrial  Engineering in Agronomy. In the first semester of this year, I did an Erasmus at the University of Geneva in Environmental Sciences, and I m now at CERN to work on my master’s thesis for six months. What a wonderful place to start my professional career!  I am really happy to be there 🙂

My job at CERN is part of the OpenSkyLab (OSL) project, where I help to develop processes to transform molasse-based geological excavation materials from the future FCC into functional soils and substrates. 

When I’m not at CERN, I’m most probably training… Sport is a big part of my life, and especially triathlon. I really enjoy this region between the lake and the mountains, which I try to explore as much as possible. Simple things make me happy: being in the nature, sharing a meal or a drink (or both) with friends or family, for example ! I’m looking forward to meeting and working with all of you!

Asbjørn Deibjerg Hansen,

Hejsa! My name is Asbjørn, 24 years old, I’ve joined on the team as a bachelor’s intern until mid-April and will primarily be working on the NIRMA/TURTLE project as part of the HSE-OHS-GI. I’m currently studying “Technology Management and Marine Engineering” at SIMAC in the city of Svendborg.

I’m Danish and grew up on the island of Langeland in the southern Funen archipelago – home to the best fruit orchards in Denmark (in my un-biased opinion…). I’ve been a conscript in D.E.M.A., sailed with Maersk, and briefly worked in the technical department of a hospital.

I am very fond of trying out new hobbies and stuff – shortly after joining the team, I had my first go at skiing on Mt. Jura – went well, fell only 10 times 😉 Otherwise I enjoy music, walking around and taking in the sights, reading, cooking – and eating. Very much looking forward to meeting and working with you all!

Kristian Marius Andersen,

My Name is Kristian Marius Andersen. I am 25 years old and from Denmark. I am currently in my final semester studying Marine Engineering (Maskinmester). Previously, I worked at a brickworks and served in the Danish Royal Guard during my time in the military.

At CERN, I will be joining the HSE team working on the NIRMA project. My role involves mapping CERN for Non-Ionizing Radiation (NIR) and identifying potential hotspot areas that may impact both visitors and employees. This project will also form the basis of my bachelor’s thesis.

Outside of work, I am a very social and family-oriented person. I enjoy staying active and spending time in nature. I go hunting and fishing, take shelter trips, and enjoy outdoor life in general. For sports I run, ski, and play football. I also love traveling and being spontaneous.
