Tjorben Michael Heine, HSE-FRS

Hi everyone! My name is Tjorben and I come from Germany.

I completed a B.Eng. in Rescue Engineering in Hamburg and, after receiving a license as an occupational safety specialist, I collaborated with several fire brigades on various projects to enhance their day-to-day safety.

I then pursued the International Master’s in Fire Safety Engineering. Some of you may already know me from my thesis internship at CERN, where I modelled fire brigade interventions in accelerator tunnel fires.

I am now joining the HSE-FRS team, where I will be working on evacuation plans and alarm reception, as well as representing the interests of the fire brigade in the FCC project.

Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, cycling (both pedal- and petrol-powered) and skiing in winter. I’m also hoping to do some sailing this summer!

Beatriz Golin Arcencio,

Hello everyone!

I’m Beatriz, I was born and raised in Brazil (São Paulo), and I’m 25 years old. I hold a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Mauá Institute of Technology, and my background relies on reliability and safety (RAMS Engineer) for the railway sector. I’ve also worked as a Research Engineer for aeronautical systems. I’m joining the team as a Mechanical Safety Engineer.

In my free time, I love cooking, reading books, playing video games, and discovering new places and cultures by travelling. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Tomás Montes Dos Santos Gomes, HSE-RP-RWM

Hey!!
I’m Tomás, born and raised in Lisboa, Portugal. I am a nuclear engineering graduated from both KTH in Stockholm and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, specialized in Radioactive Waste Management. And that is exactly the section of HSE I joined. I am an intern helping in the operations of thee radioactive waste treatment center.

On my free time I play Waterpolo, and Basketball, but in reality, I don’t refuse any kind of sportive activities! Do spend the remaining fair share of free time with comic books and video games.

Usually spottable performing photosynthesis around campus at lunch time, and once the weather becomes proper around the Geneva lake after work!

Ines Debit, HSE-ENV-PM

Hello everyone!

I’m Inès, 23, originally from the Pays de Gex, and a recent graduate in environmental project management, specialising in biodiversity conservation.🦇🪶🌱

I’ve already had the opportunity to complete two internships at CERN, and I’m continuing my journey here as a GRAD to carry out my work on biodiversity conservation across the organisation’s sites.

On a personal note, I enjoy hiking, photography (wildlife and street photography), swimming and cycling, astronomy and music (of all genres!).

I look forward to seeing you around campus (you’ll usually find me in the green spaces😉).

Matias Salonen, HSE-ENV-PM

Hi everyone!

I’m Matias, from Pori, Finland. I study at the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences Energy and Environmental Engineering. I have worked at wastewater facilities, both in private sector and in public.  I am excited about starting to work at HSE-ENV-PM, where I am conducting an ecotoxicological study about CERN’s effluents.

I like to spend time in nature and am planning to visit the local area’s best nature spots. Feel free to reach out if you have suggestions! Also, as a former hockey player with 10+ years on the ice, and working as a volunteer junior coach, I love ice hockey and rollerblade skating.

I’m originally from Poland and have recently joined CERN as an HSE Training Specialist in the HSE-ST-TS team. Before this, I worked in HSE in the maritime and oil and gas industries, helping keep operations safe on ships and at sites.

At CERN, I’ll be working with the team on both existing and new training activities.

Outside of work, I enjoy exploring Switzerland, especially hiking, as well as travelling and learning new things.

Charlie Maximilian Baker,

Hello, my name is Charlie and I’m from Bristol in the UK. I did my undergraduate degree in computer science in Nottingham and will be working on the cluster and FLUKA system with the HSE-RP team.

In my own time I enjoy hiking and cycling, or when I’m feeling less active cooking and watching or making films. As I have never been to Switzerland I am also looking forward to enjoying the surrounding area and visiting plenty of different places.

Hello everyone!

My name is Felix, and I’m originally from Stuttgart, Germany, where I did my studies in Mechanical Engineering. Some of you may already know me from my time in HSE over the past three years, where I worked as doctoral student.

I’m now excited to be back in HSE-TS-IMS working as a Reliability Engineer. My main task will be to ensure the reliable integration of the in-house developed ASIC ACCURATE into our radiation monitoring systems. 

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time in nature, especially running and cycling. I’m also passionate about photography and cooking.

Freya Ashleigh Bowyer

Hello everyone,

My name is Freya. I am originally from the UK and completed a Health Physics Apprenticeship at Wylfa Power Station in North Wales, where I developed a strong foundation in radiation protection and nuclear safety. After this, I joined Nuvia at Dungeness Power Station in Kent, where I spent 18 months gaining experience working on high activity waste and ponds projects.

I am now joining the HSE-RP team at CERN as a Radiation Protection Technician, where I will be supporting activities at the Large Hadron Collider during LS3.

Outside of work, I enjoy staying active, spending time outdoors, and travelling—while also looking forward to slightly drier weather here than in North Wales, and the opportunity to go skiing more in the winter.

Evi Heil, HSE-RP-AS

Hello everyone,

my name is Evi. I recently finished my studies in Radiation Protection back in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Now at CERN, I will be working as a Radiation Protection Engineer for the LHC experiments. As these have only been my first few weeks, I am very excited to get to know everybody and everything!

Outside of work, I love to go hiking, cycling or horse riding. Apart from that, I also love to try new (knee-friendly) sports, if anyone has recommendations! If I am not outside or doing sports, I enjoy snuggling up on my sofa with a cup of tea – either reading a good book or writing poetry.

Hello, I’m Dan from Sheffield in the UK. Nice to meet you all. Before joining CERN I worked offshore in the oil and gas industry as an Integrity Engineer. I’m now joining as the General Safety & Equipment Integrity team as the Pressure Equipment Integrity Technical Engineer. My family and I have recently moved here, and we’re looking forward to exploring the region and experiencing everything it has to offer. Outside of work, I’m a keen sportsman and already interested in trying new and emerging sports beyond my usual activities.

Daniel Leif Ake Karlsson, HSE-FRS

Hello!

My name is Daniel and I am originally from Sweden and recently moved to the area to work with the fire brigade at CERN, where I will be part of the rescue service for the next five years.

Before coming here, I worked as a firefighter in Sweden for five years. Besides regular firefighting, my home station also had a specialized HazMat unit where I gained experience with hazardous material related incidents. I have also worked as a drone instructor, training others to use unmanned aerial systems in operational work.

In my free time I enjoy staying active and I like pretty much all kinds of physical activities. I regularly train and enjoy trying new sports and outdoor activities. I also have a strong interest in football and like both playing and following the sport.

David Villamil Fernandez

Hi everyone!

I’m David. I’m from Asturias, a region in the north of Spain. I’ve been at CERN for the past three years, and now I’m [re]joining HSE-TS-CS as a Tech Lead, where I not only develop web applications but also shape the technical direction of our projects, keep an eye on code quality, spot areas for improvement, and support the team so everyone feels confident and ready to contribute.

My hobbies outside work haven’t changed much since last time I wrote this introduction. I enjoy a lot travelling, spending time in nature, doing sports, and watching films. The only difference is that I like to think I ski better now than when I first joined 😄

I’m really looking forward to working with you again. Same energy as day one!!

Ioannis Mikes, HSE-OHS-DR

Hi everyone! I’m Yannis and I grew up in Halkidiki, a region in northern Greece famous for its amazing beaches! I studied Civil Engineering and completed an MSc in Earthquake Engineering in Thessaloniki, Greece, where I also spent four years working as a civil/structural engineer in design and construction management. I hold a PhD in Earthquake Engineering from City, University of London and I worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

I recently joined the HSE-OHS-DR section, and in my team (Structural & Earthquake Engineering), we assess the structural integrity and regulatory compliance of existing and future facilities and evaluate and seismic risk of CERN’s infrastructure.

In my free time, I (try to) play basketball and online chess, read history, enjoy old-school rock music and explore new places nearby with friends.

Alice Battistino, HSE-TS-AS

Hi everyone! My name is Alice, I am an English and Maltese national who has recently joined HSE as an administrative student. 

I have a bachelor’s degree from the University of Malta and am now studying for a Master’s Degree in Media and Communication with Malmö University. 

I am very interested in internal communication and am keen to make the most out of this experience by learning how to support my fellow colleagues to the very best of my abilities.

Some fun facts about me, as a teenager I practiced Judo and formed part of the Malta national team. Now, in my free time I love to explore nature, play video games and read. I am also a big film buff and especially love watching sci-fi, thrillers and anything spooky! 

Robin Jean Platiaux, HSE-ENV-PM

Hello everyone ! My name is Robin, I’m 23 years old and I come from Belgium. I did my studies in my beloved city of Ath, and I’m currently  finishing a Master’s degree in Industrial  Engineering in Agronomy. In the first semester of this year, I did an Erasmus at the University of Geneva in Environmental Sciences, and I m now at CERN to work on my master’s thesis for six months. What a wonderful place to start my professional career!  I am really happy to be there 🙂

My job at CERN is part of the OpenSkyLab (OSL) project, where I help to develop processes to transform molasse-based geological excavation materials from the future FCC into functional soils and substrates. 

When I’m not at CERN, I’m most probably training… Sport is a big part of my life, and especially triathlon. I really enjoy this region between the lake and the mountains, which I try to explore as much as possible. Simple things make me happy: being in the nature, sharing a meal or a drink (or both) with friends or family, for example ! I’m looking forward to meeting and working with all of you!

Asbjørn Deibjerg Hansen,

Hejsa! My name is Asbjørn, 24 years old, I’ve joined on the team as a bachelor’s intern until mid-April and will primarily be working on the NIRMA/TURTLE project as part of the HSE-OHS-GI. I’m currently studying “Technology Management and Marine Engineering” at SIMAC in the city of Svendborg.

I’m Danish and grew up on the island of Langeland in the southern Funen archipelago – home to the best fruit orchards in Denmark (in my un-biased opinion…). I’ve been a conscript in D.E.M.A., sailed with Maersk, and briefly worked in the technical department of a hospital.

I am very fond of trying out new hobbies and stuff – shortly after joining the team, I had my first go at skiing on Mt. Jura – went well, fell only 10 times 😉 Otherwise I enjoy music, walking around and taking in the sights, reading, cooking – and eating. Very much looking forward to meeting and working with you all!

Kristian Marius Andersen,

My Name is Kristian Marius Andersen. I am 25 years old and from Denmark. I am currently in my final semester studying Marine Engineering (Maskinmester). Previously, I worked at a brickworks and served in the Danish Royal Guard during my time in the military.

At CERN, I will be joining the HSE team working on the NIRMA project. My role involves mapping CERN for Non-Ionizing Radiation (NIR) and identifying potential hotspot areas that may impact both visitors and employees. This project will also form the basis of my bachelor’s thesis.

Outside of work, I am a very social and family-oriented person. I enjoy staying active and spending time in nature. I go hunting and fishing, take shelter trips, and enjoy outdoor life in general. For sports I run, ski, and play football. I also love traveling and being spontaneous.
