Efstathia Kopterou

My name is Efi and I first joined CERN in 2017 as Administrative Student in the DAO Office of EN Department, where I first obtained a knowledge of overall CERN administrative rules and procedures. I have continued working at CERN as Administrative Assistant in several groups of EN Department, but also had the opportunity to be involved in the coordination of Nanolab Project and to have an introduction to Contract Management practices at CERN. As of January 2021, I started working as an Administrative Assistant in the CERN Fire & Rescue Service of HSE Unit; working with a 24/7 service is definitely a challenge – especially the part of planning yearly shift schedules – but it is what I enjoy the most, being active and challenged!

Ivana Rose Summerfield

I joined CERN in February 2021 as a Legal Fellow. I am, for the most part, contributing to the revision of CERN's Safety Rules. I find it interesting as the process takes into account the requirements of the Organisation, the laws and regulations of the Host States, EU regulations and directives as well as international law. Prior to joining CERN I worked as a lawyer for a corporate firm in Amsterdam in matters of regulation and litigation. Outside of office hours you might find me playing ukulele, climbing or doing a spot of baking."

Marija Kranjcevic

I started working at CERN in February 2021 as a Senior Fellow in the Infrastructure and Building Safety Engineering Section (HSE-OHS-IB). I come from Croatia where I got my MSc in Applied Mathematics from the Department of Mathematics, University of Zagreb. My PhD degree is from the Department of Computer Science, ETH Zurich on the topic: Multi-objective shape optimization of radio-frequency cavities. In the course of my PhD I collaborated with researchers from the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), where I later also spent time as a Postdoctoral Fellow working on the design of the Swiss Light Source upgrade.

Gabriele Zorloni

I graduated in nuclear engineering and got my PhD in energy and nuclear science and technology at Polytechnic of Milan, Italy, with a focus on radiation measurements related to radiation protection. After some years of fruitful scientific collaborations, I am now a senior fellow in the HSE-RP-SP Section. During my experience, I was involved in projects related to dosimetry in high-energy pulsed stray fields around medical and research accelerators, as well as in neutron measurements in the context of radiation protection. At CERN, I am currently working on sterilisation studies, and related radiation protection aspects, employing high-energy electron beams both from research accelerators and medical LINACs. The still active Polytechnic-CERN projects about neutron and high-energy pulsed field dosimetry, mostly included within the EURADOS framework, are carried on as well.

Lucie Elie

In February 2021, I started my CERN fellowship at the Radiation Protection group (HSE-RP-AS). My missions are to provide support to LHC and Physics Beyond Colliders (PBC) projects at LHC. In this way, I do simulations with the FLUKA Monte Carlo radiation transport code, estimation though the ActiWiz code and writing of dedicated post-process tools. I will also participate in operational RP and measurements campaigns.Before CERN, I graduated from Polytech Grenoble as a Health, Safety and Environment Engineer. After that, I did a specialization year in Atomic Engineering. Finally, I did an internship at IRSN (Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire) in France on the MCNP calculation code.

Vassili Cruchet

I started a six months internship as electrical engineer in the HSE-RP-IL group in February 2021. This internship is part of my studies at EPFL in Lausanne, where I am doing a master in microelectronics.

I am mostly working on tests and characterization of a new ASIC named ACCURATE developed by the team to sense ultra-low current coming out of ionization chamber present on radiation monitoring devices. On long term, this new front-end ASIC should be integrated in the next generation of CROME system. The job involves circuit design, embedded systems programming and data extraction and analysis on Matlab. Working on concrete applications in an R&D project is very exciting and I will have learned a lot during my experience here.

Raphael Otzenberger

I spent more than 11 years at CERN Internal Audit service, where I had the opportunity to carry out audits and reviews in virtually all Departments, incl. the Pension Fund. I joined HSE on March 1st as the new Section Leader of the Medical Service. Covid has become an important part of our activity and obviously my objective is to continue delivering the support and service required, as we have done so far. At the same time, my vision is to prepare for the world and life after Covid and to have a Medical Service that delivers on its mission, adds value where it matters and contributes to the achievement of HSE and CERN objectives.

Lasse Vadla

I'm Lasse Vadla from the westcoast of Norway, Stavanger. Worked there as a firefighter, and have know joined Cern Firebrigade. Im very proud and excited to be a part of the Cern family, and looking forward to my time here , and in its surroundings.

Felix Waldhauser

Hi there, my name is Felix Waldhauser, I am a 24 years-old technical student from Germany and working in the Radiation Protection group (HSE-RP-IL). I am studying mechanical engineering in my masters at the University of Stuttgart with focus on reliability engineering, microelectronics, and data science. Here at CERN, I am working on anomaly detection algorithms for data-driven predictive maintenance. When not working on my scientific report or participating in interesting discussions, I enjoy mountain biking, cooking, bouldering, and sailing.

Miikka Leinonen

I'm Miikka, 36 year old fire officer from southeast Finland. I have a family of three and we love to explore nature and see different places. I'm really enthusiastic to work at Cern with colleagues from different backgrounds and nationalities.

Jean Audrain

Je m'appelle Jean AUDRAIN, je viens de Rennes en Bretagne. Je suis officier de sapeurs-pompiers depuis 12 ans et je viens d'intégrer le service secours et feu. J'ai choisi de venir au CERN pour travailler avec des personnes d'horizons divers et enrichir mon expérience professionnel dans le domaine de l'urgence et de la prévention des sinistres. Ma spécialité est la gestion des systèmes d'informations et de communication pour les interventions des services de secours.

Clyde Laforge

I joined the HSE-RP-IL to work on the CROME integration with the new ASIC for my master thesis at EPFL. Outside work, I like to play the guitar, go climbing, or contribute to free software (thought not as much as I'd like). I'm looking forward to meeting people from the CERN community!

Alice Formento

Hi everyone! I’m Alice Formento a new Junior Fellow in the HSE-RP. I’ve started my adventure at CERN the 1st of July and i’m very excited for this opportunity. I’ve just graduated in Nuclear Engineering from Politecnico di Milano and at CERN I will be working in the Radiation Protection Group. I’m a dynamic person, I love hiking and climbing and every kind of sport !

Tommaso Lorenzon

Hello everyone! My name is Tommaso Lorenzon and I am 25. Here at CERN, I am serving as a junior fellow in Radiation Protection (HSE-RP-AS) since August 2021. I am a nuclear engineer and I come from Italy. My expectations for this amazing journey in such a cutting-edge research centre are extremely high, surely as high as the effort I will put in my work! ? And… I will not forget to stay well trained: I enjoy playing basketball, mountain sports, tennis and recently have started cycling on French and Swiss roads!

Janne Lakkala

Hi, I am Janne, free and active Firefighter Paramedic from Finland. Laid back lifestyle is my thing. Extremely happy to be here for next five years, get to know new people and learn from different cultures.

Marta Alegria Bernal

Hello to everybody! I am Marta Alegria, the new administrative student in HSE-TS-AS since August 2021. I am from Zaragoza, Spain, but I have been living in the area since 2016. Nowadays, I am finishing my MBA in Administration and Business Management at the University of Barcelona and gaining professional experience from the international environment of CERN. In my free time, I like a lot to cook, travel and practice sports with my friends.

I discover the Administrative Program thanks to the last CERN open days while I was helping as a volunteer. Since then, I was thinking about the idea of being part of the organization and the background I could gain in case of being selected. Something that I saw as impossible until I was lucky enough to be chosen as the new administrative student of the HSE UNIT.

After almost two months in HSE, I have discovered that my expectations were far from expected. Every day is better than the previous one giving me new professional opportunities and challenges.

I hope to meet all of you soon 🙂

Luis Aleixo

Hi everybody! My name is Luís Aleixo, I’m 24 years old, and I'm from Évora, Portugal. I’m a software engineer who has joined CERN on the July the 1st to work at the CARA (COVID Airborne Risk Assessment Tool) project. Since my arrival here I have already learned a lot of things, met many physicists and engineers, and had the ATLAS experience! During my journey at CERN I’m looking forward to improving my soft and hard skills, as well as to learn with people from all over the world. I enjoy practicing exercise, being creative at the kitchen, and spending time with friends. I'm passionate about travelling, so I have the chance to know new places and cultures.

I am Will from UK. I worked in the London Fire Brigade LFB for many years in various roles before making the move to Switzerland for this new exciting opportunity to work in a unique environment with many interesting people from all over the world. I am very happy to be here with my family. I love meeting new people and the great outdoor adventures in nature that this affords us all. I look forward to this new experience and many more

Daniel Johansson

I’m Daniel, firefighter from Greater Gothenburg Fire Department in Sweden, background as a RP in nuclear plants around Europe. Very excited to be a part of Cern, to live in this region and it sure feels good to be in an high tech international setting again. I love all kinds of mountain activities.

Enrico Cardellino

I am Enrico Cardellino, an Italian PhD student in structural, geotechnical engineering and seismic risk. I am an engineer and I have a master’s degree in structural and geotechnical engineering obtained at the University of Naples Federico II. I’m here to study the thermomechanical behaviour of ATLAS cavern lining through an advanced thermomechanical model using SAFIR software and then to assess the fire resistance regarding the proposed damage states.

Ignacio Eduardo Mendez-Bonito Galindo

Hello new colleagues, I am Ignacio I will develop software in the HSE-TS-CS section. I am part of the REMUS team and I will be implementing new functionalities and solving problems on REMUS web. During my spare time I enjoy hiking.

Pantelis Ioannou

My name is Pantelis Ioannou and I come from Cyprus. I have studied BEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering at the University of Manchester from September 2017 until July 2020. Moreover, I have just finished my MSc in Advanced Chemical Engineering at Imperial College London which took place between October 2020 to October 2021. Currently I am part of the HSE Environmental Prevention team working as VI from 1/10/2021. Overall, I am a very active person who really enjoys sports such as football and swimming. I also love listening to music and watching movies.
