In brief

Maternity is a period full of physical and psychological changes for the pregnant person and their partner.
The pregnant person has the responsibility to declare their pregnancy in order to preserve their health and that of the unborn child.
The employer must ensure the protection of the physical and psychological health of its employees, and this includes pregnant people.
Returning to work after parental leave is a milestone full of challenges for the person and their supervisors, which must be well planned and supported.
The earlier the announcement of a planned pregnancy or a pregnancy in progress, the better the protection will be throughout this wonderful event in your life.

The Medical Service is available to all members of the Personnel to answer any questions related to maternity or parenthood.

Context

At CERN, as in its two Host States, there is no obligation for the employee to reveal their pregnancy. The earlier a pregnancy is announced, the greater the chances of preventing a possible risk by taking all appropriate measures.

Indeed, certain occupational risks can have an impact on the smooth development of the pregnancy, with possible damage to the health of the pregnant person and the child:

Physical risks (carrying loads, repetitive tasks, standing for long periods, irregular working hours, vibrations, noise, etc.)
Hazardous chemical agents (e.g. asbestos, lead, etc.)
Biological risks (activities exposing to rubella or toxoplasmosis if the person is not immunised)
Risks related to ionising radiation (prohibited assignment for work requiring category A classification and conditional assignment for work requiring category B classification)
Risks related to electromagnetic fields (under certain conditions)
Night work
