The establishment of CERN Safety rules shall follow the principles set out below:
- The objective of CERN Safety rules is to ensure a high level of Safety commensurate with relevant Safety practice in Europe.
- CERN Safety rules take into account the intergovernmental status of the Organization and apply throughout its site.
- CERN Safety rules shall be based on European Union Regulations, Directives and Standards (EN) where they exist and where they are deemed appropriate by CERN. Such European Union Regulations, Directives and Standards may be declared applicable by CERN independently from their implementation into national law.
The following document types are CERN Safety rules and as such are mandatory:
Safety Regulations (SR) – translate CERN’s Safety policy into rules applicable to various activity fields of the Organization, for the purposes of occupational health and safety, environmental protection, safety of equipment and installations, and operational Safety.
Safety Codes (Link) – transform CERN Safety policy into rules applicable to various activity fields of the Organization. These Safety Codes are called to be replaced by new Safety rules.
Safety Plans and Safety Procedures (SP) – include main schemes, procedures, organisational charts, or programmes, usually with CERN-wide application, having binding effect in matters of Safety.
General Safety Instructions (GSI) – determine, for defined fields of activity or defined types of equipment, how Safety Regulations (SR), Safety Plans and Procedures (SP) must be implemented. These General Safety Instructions are usually issued to cover CERN-wide aspects.
Specific Safety Instructions (SSI) – determine, for more restricted objects than a General Safety Instruction, the detailed provisions for the implementation of Safety Regulations (SR), Safety Plans and Safety Procedures (SP).
Safety Instructions (IS) – implement, in general, existing Safety Codes. These Safety Instructions are called to be replaced by new Safety rules.
Safety Notes (NS) - give advise or are a reminder of current rules published in the Safety Codes or Instructions. These Safety Notes are called to be replaced by new Safety rules.
Some other documents of interest for the Safety at CERN are also available such as Safety Forms (Link), Safety Guidelines (Link), Safety RP Procedures (Link) and other Safety related documents (Link).
